What are pearlescent pigments?

 

Pearlescent pigments are created by iridescence caused by multiple reflections from two or more semi-transparent surfaces. They consist of mica platelets coated with a thin layer of metallic oxide. This simple structure creates the basis of most pearlescent pigments resulting in a wide variety of different effects.

What are Pearlescent Pigments?

Pearlescent pigments replicate mother of pearl with MICA platelets clad with metallic oxides. Pearlescent pigments use thin, precisely controlled films of titanium dioxide on mica to separate white light into its component parts to produce twin colours, one by reflection and one by transmission.

 

Pearlescent Pigments Differentiation

Standard pigments absorb all colour in white light except the colour of the pigment. Metal flake pigments strongly reflect light as a mirror but without depth.  Effect pigments add a very soft, smooth 3D depth effect which is not possible with standard pigments
